At least 116 people have been confirmed dead in a stampede during a ‘Satsang’ religious gathering in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday.

As per the information received, 116 persons had been confirmed dead, Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V said, adding that he preliminary investigation in the incident is going on.

A PTI report has said that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is likely to visit Hathras district tomorrow. A senior government official said that Adityanath is monitoring the situation, and UP Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and DGP Prashant Kumar hae been directed to reach the spot.

Adityanath has appointed a team comprising the ADG of Agra zone and the Divisional Commissioner of Aligarh to investigate the incident’s causes. The team is expected to submit its report within 24 hours, according to a statement from the UP government.

A large crowd had gathered for the event, an official told PTI. According to SHO Ashish Kumar of Sikandara Rao police station, the stampede occurred due to overcrowding. 

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. He directed officials to promptly reach the scene and initiate relief efforts.
