Tata Motors is expanding its CNG portfolio with the next launch slated to be the Nexon iCNG. The carmaker has confirmed that the CNG version of the subcompact crossover will be launched in the ongoing fiscal. So we can expect Tata Motors to launch the Nexon iCNG by the end of 2024.
Test mules of Nexon with a CNG powertrain were spotted previously on multiple occasions for almost a year now. Earlier in January this year, Tata Motors previewed a concept of the Nexon iCNG at the inaugural edition of Bharat Mobility Expo. Let us look at what to expect from the Nexon iCNG.
Tata Nexon iCNG: Expected exterior, interior styling
Exterior design of the Nexon iCNG is expected to be the same overall as the regular combustion and battery-powered Nexon. The only distinction will be the iCNG badges slammed on the tailgate. Inside the cabin too, the layout and design will be exactly similar to the fossil-fueled sibling.
Tata might give the upholstery a different shade to distinguish it from the other variants in the lineup. Boot space will be compromised a little bit, but Tata’s twin-cylinder CNG setup will ensure the Nexon iCNG offers a sizable luggage capacity.
Tata Nexon iCNG: Expected features
Expect the Nexon iCNG to boast off the same features as the Nexon in its top-spec avatar. These include features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment, 10.25-inch fully digital driver’s display, auto climate control, wireless phone charging, iRA connected car tech, ventilated and height-adjustable front seats, cruise control, and a 360-degree camera.
In terms of safety, Nexon iCNG will offer six airbags as standard, hill assist, electronic stability program (ESP), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a 360-degree camera.
Tata Nexon iCNG: Expected powertrain
Tata Motors will offer the CNG variants of Nexon with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, making it the first turbocharged car in India to come with a factory-fitted CNG kit. In its petrol guise, this motor churns out 118 bhp and 170 Nm of peak torque. However, in the CNG trim will surely be detuned with a lower output.
Transmission duties could include either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual gearbox. It is uncertain as of now if Tata Motors will offer the option of an automatic gearbox like a 6-speed AMT, a 6-speed torque converter, or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in the Nexon iCNG. Expect Tata Nexon iCNG to return an average of around 25 km/kg.
