Pharmaceutical Granulator Machine

Granulation is a significant phase in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic process. It refers to the process of collecting powder particles together through either bond agents or compression. One of the main purposes of granulation is to prevent the segregation of the constituents of powder mix. Many powders, because of their small size, irregular shape or surface characteristics, are cohesive and do not flow well. Granules produced from such a cohesive system will be larger and more isodiametric, both factors contributing to improved flow properties. In pharmaceutical processes, granulation can also be used to bond different agents together to create a chemical reaction.

Types of Pharmaceutical Granulators

The pharmaceutical industry employs two types of granulation techniques which are wet granulation and dry granulation. Wet granulation process acquires granulation liquid to be added into powder to bond the components together. The binder or adhesive is incorporated in the form of a solution in a suitable liquid. The liquid should be non-toxic and water is preferably used for this purpose. During dry granulation process granules are formed without any additional liquid because the final product might be sensitive to moisture.

Pharmaceutical Wet Granulators

Depending on the type of influence under which liquid is added into powder, there are three main types of wet granulators. High shear granulator where liquid is added under influence of the impeller. Twin screw generator where liquid is added under influence of screws. Or fluidized bed granulator with liquid added by means of an airflow. Agitation of the particles along with the added liquid produces bonding between the primary powder particles to produce wet granules. To finalize the process of granulation, liquid is evaporated to leave the granules with particles holding together with the adhesive binder. The dried mixture may need to be milled or granulated to get the final pellet size. Complexity of wet granulation process depends on the characteristics of the powders and the desired final result. The whole process starts when liquid is added into powder, the powder gets wet and a thin film is formed between powder particles. The more liquid is added into powder, the more substantial the film gets which provides stronger adhesion between particles when liquid is finally evaporated.

Types of Wet Granulators

  • Planetary mixer can be used for wet mixing (planetary mixers are used for dry mixing as well). If dry components are required to be mixed together, the prior use of specific dry mixers (depending on the nature of the powder) will be needed. They will then be added into the mixing vessel.
  • High shear granulator. This type of granulator usually comprises mixing bowl with a bottom entry impeller and a side mounted chopper. Impeller is needed for mixing ingredients and chopper for further granulation. All dry ingredients are agitated into the mixing bowl and then run the chopper blade in order to achieve granulation. The binding agent is added during the blending process through a spraying nozzle.
  • Fluidized bed granulator. Powder granules are fluidized using streams of air. In this type of granulator, the liquid properties of the powder allow a homogeneous granulation. The liquid may be heated before it is sprayed into the bed of powder.

Pharmaceutical Dry Granulators

In dry granulation process granules are formed without addition of any liquid solution. Dry granulation is performed using a slugging tool or a tablet press machine. The end point of granulation can be determined by several principles, for example when the desired particle size is reached.

Oscillating Granulator

Oscillating granulator can be used for both dry and wet granulation process. It plays a significant role in the process of granulation as the final product (tablet) quality depends on the virtue of the granules used for its compression. This type of pharmaceutical granulator is extensively used to mill or granulate solid chunk of material into powder or granules. Unique oscillatory rotor action ensures high outputs and a high-quality product with minimum flaws.

Area of Use

Granulators are mainly used in pharmaceutical industry, as well as chemical and cosmetic industries.  Granulators are used for production of tablets, pellets and powder.

Main Manufacturers

Glatt granulators as well as granulators by Bohle and GEA are the most popular manufacturers in the category. Among main manufacturers of granulators also belong brands like Aeromatic, Frewitt and Koruma.
